Project Greenglow – The Quest for Gravity Control

The story of an extraordinary scientific adventure – the attempt to control gravity. The dream of flying cars and journeys to the stars no longer seems quite so distant

This is the story of an extraordinary scientific adventure – the attempt to control gravity. For centuries, the precise workings of gravity have confounded the greatest scientific minds – from Newton to Faraday and Einstein – and the idea of controlling gravity has been seen as little more than a fanciful dream. Yet in the mid 1990s, UK defence manufacturer BAE Systems began a ground-breaking project code-named Greenglow, which set about turning science fiction into reality. On the other … Ler mais

How to Build a Time Machine

Horizon meets scientists working on the cutting edge of discovery - people who may discover how to build wormholes, manipulate entangled photons or build functioning time crystals

Time travel is not forbidden by the laws of nature, but to build a time machine, we would need to understand more about those laws and how to subvert them than we do now. And every day, science does learn more.

In this film Horizon meets the scientists working on the cutting edge of discovery – men and women who may discover how to build wormholes, manipulate entangled photons or build fully functioning time crystals. In short, these scientists may … Ler mais

POWERS OF TEN

Powers of ten and the relative size of things in the Universe

Powers of Ten is one of the Eameses’ best-known films. Since it was produced in 1977, it has been seen by millions of people both nationally and internationally. As with A Communication Primer and 2n (a 2-minute Peep Show from the exhibition, Mathematica), in this film, Charles and Ray employed the system of exponential powers to visualize the importance of scale.

When the Eameses came across the 1957 book by Kees Boeke, Cosmic View: The Universe in Forty Jumps, … Ler mais

Einstein’s Quantum Riddle

Join scientists as they grab light from across the universe to prove quantum entanglement is real

Over the past century, scientists have made huge strides in understanding the mind-bending rules that govern the microworld of atoms and subatomic particles. But these rules, called quantum mechanics, contain one particularly bizarre, unexplained phenomenon: quantum entanglement.

Imagine two subatomic particles that mirror changes in each other instantaneously over any distance – apparently without communicating. Einstein called it “spooky action at a distance” and although no one can explain how it works, scientists have already begun to harness … Ler mais
