Frequentemente encarada como uma disciplina abstrata, longínqua e “maldita”, a Matemática tem, todavia, um potencial fascinante que importa redescobrir. Essa tem sido, em grande medida, uma das preocupações do Departamento de Matemática da Universidade de Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro (UTAD).

É nesse sentido que a instituição apresentou um estudo sobre as varandas antigas de Vila Real, na passada semana e onde se procurou demonstrar a aplicação de conhecimentos etnomatemáticos por parte dos artesãos que trabalham em ferro forjado.
