In 1943, a 24-year-old maths student and a GPO engineer combined to hack into Hitler&#8217;s personal super-code machine &#8211; not <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Enigma_machine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Enigma<\/a> but an even tougher system, which he called his &#8216;secrets writer&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>Their break turned the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Battle_of_Kursk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Battle of Kursk<\/a>, powered the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Normandy_landings\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">D-day landings<\/a> and orchestrated the end of the conflict in Europe.
